STEPHENVILLE — Stephenville last lost a football game one year ago against the Monterrey Tec Borregos. From there, the Yellow Jackets put together 13 consecutive victories en route to the 2012 3A Division 1 state title.
But Friday was a different story for the Yellow Jackets, who held on to defeat Monterrey Tec 17-16 in a rematch at Tarleton State’s Memorial Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets, led by Jarrett Stidham who was making his first start at quarterback, took a 14-3 lead into halftime.
Stidham got the Yellow Jackets on the board halfway through the first quarter, connecting on a 7-yard pass to tight end Brock Morrison. Morrison finished as the Yellow Jackets’ top receiver with five receptions for 69 yards.
Will Brock padded Stephenville’s lead to 14-0 with a 1-yard run in the second quarter.
The lone score in the first half for Monterrey Tec came on a 31-yard field goal by David Trevino.
Monterrey Tec came out strong in the second half, forcing two Stephenville turnovers leading to two rushing touchdowns, a 65-yard run by Fernando Villanueva and a 10-yard run by Marcelo Gonzalez.
With Stephenville trailing late in the third quarter, UTEP commit Mookie Carlile intercepted a pass to set up a 48-yard drive and Luis Garcia’s game-winning 30-yard field goal with 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
