HALTOM CITY — Haltom’s Aaron Jones returned two kicks for touchdowns to help propel the Buffalos past Saginaw Boswell 35-23 at Birdville Stadium on Friday night.
Jones took a punt 70 yards for a touchdown in the first half and returned a Pioneers kickoff 73 yards to help seal the win for Haltom.
The Buffalos jumped out to a 14-point lead after an opening-drive touchdown by Jonathon Armstrong and the punt return for a score.
Boswell battled back with two field goals by Luis Montalvo and a touchdown pass from Drew Bicknell to Sean Webster.
Haltom took a 21-13 lead just before halftime on an Israel Walton 1-yard plunge.
Armstrong consistently kept the Pioneers’ defense guessing on the dive option, often keeping the ball and racking up yardage. He finished the game with 162 yards on 24 carries.
Boswell kept pace with the larger Haltom lines by executing a deliberate passing game.
Bicknell was 19 of 32 for 183 yards.
A stadium lighting problem caused a blackout with 37 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but that didn’t slow down a Haltom scoring drive, as it finished a 64-yard march halfway through the fourth quarter.
On the Pioneers’ next possession, Antoine Stevenson capped a 66-yard drive with 1-yard run to make it 28-20.
A fumble on first down by Haltom set up Boswell on the Buffalos’ 19-yard line with just under six minutes to play, but the Buffs’ defense held, forcing the fourth field goal by Montalvo with 4:20 remaining.
Following Jones’ kickoff return score, the Pioneers’ hopes were dashed when they fumbled on the Haltom 8 with 2:30 to go.
