BURLESON — Running back Dalton Cole completed what Azle started early and Jamie King did the rest in a 51-34 victory Friday over Burleson to open the season for both teams at Burleson Stadium.
Cole scored on three 1-yard touchdown runs in the first half, his only touches, to rally Azle (1-0) from a 7-0 deficit with 27 unanswered points. Burleson (0-1) has lost 12 straight games.
A 10-play drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown pass from King to Sean Townsend all but sealed the win with 7:22 left in the third quarter as Azle went up 34-7.
King converted 11 of 17 pass attempts for 249 yards and three touchdowns and compiled 307 total yards. Burleson’s Isaiah Hall had 232 total yards.
But it was Cole who built the lead for Azle. His second TD gave Azle its first lead of the season, 13-7, with 2:01 left in the first quarter, and his third TD came following a fumble recovery with 1:30 left in the first half to put Azle up 27-7.
Jamie King countered the Cole showcase by finding an uncovered Tyler Albers in the end zone on a 15-yard TD pass with 3:34 left in the first half to give the Hornets a 20-7 lead.
Burleson struck first with a 3-yard TD run by Isaiah Hall with 2:35 elapsed in the game.
