Five people escaped serious injuries Thursday morning when a train hit a sports utility vehicle, authorities said.

On impact, the vehicle rolled and part of the back of it was ripped off.

Three children, ages 4, 9 and 10, and their mother were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries, said MedStar spokesman Matt Zavadsky on Thursday.

The father of the children was treated at the scene, Zavadsky said.

The crash was reported at 7:15 a.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of W. Biddison St.

When they arrived, firefighters discovered that everyone had gotten out of the vehicle, said fire Lt. Carol Jones on Thursday.

According to fire reports, the SUV was attempting to cross in front of the train as the red warning lights were going on and the train crossing arms were going down, Jones said.

“The train was going about 25 mph,” Jones said. “It wasn’t able to stop.”

The train dragged the SUV about 200 feet, fire officials said.
