TCU football notes: With season-opening showdown days away, Frogs ‘need to relax’

The season opener, no matter the opponent, can’t arrive soon enough for most football players. A mix of emotions swirling in anticipation begins to build and hits a fever pitch the night before the game.

For TCU coach Gary Patterson, he’d prefer his 20th-ranked Horned Frogs dial it back a bit with a long wait leading to the opener against No. 12 LSU at 8 p.m. Saturday at AT&T Stadium.

“If anything, we need to relax,” Patterson said after Wednesday’s no-pad practice in the indoor facility. “Last year, we were too young to know any better. Now we’re older and we just need to relax on both sides of the ball.”

Patterson said he wasn’t overly concerned about the matter.

“They just need to calm down,” he said. “I think they’ll even be better [Thursday]. They were tight today. Tomorrow they might be completely opposite.”

Unlike his team, Patterson seemed relaxed the last few days, at least outside of the closed practice. He even said his well-known nervous tick of tying and retying his shoes on the sidelines has disappeared.

“That nervous twitch just went away,” he said. “I haven’t tied them once. It just happened this spring. I don’t know what the deal is.”

Patterson said he didn’t have a shoelace issue growing up and that the habit started about three years ago. It has been affectionately mocked by fans and broadcasters. Whether he’s able to get through Saturday’s game without checking his laces is another story.

The next few days leading up to kickoff will be filled with numerous walk-throughs and reminders for his players, he said. TCU is expected to arrive at the stadium around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

“Especially with young football teams, we use every minute to make sure we tell them one more time what the play is going to be,” he said. “You have to prepare for the moment. They’ve been in these kinds of moments. We’ve been in these kinds of moments as a staff but not as much as a football team.”

Johnson leaves team

Defensive tackle and Argyle High School ex David Johnson is no longer playing because of a persistent knee injury. Patterson said Johnson remains with the team as a student coach.

Patterson radio returns

The Gary Patterson Show returns Thursday with TCU play-by-play man Brian Estridge. The radio show airs live from 6 to 7 p.m. each Thursday at Railhead Smokehouse at 2900 Montgomery St. in Fort Worth. TCU defensive tackle Chucky Hunter is the first player guest.

Pregame fan event

Allstate Tailgate Tour, an interactive fan experience making appearances at stadiums across the country, will be at the AT&T Stadium parking lot before TCU’s game Saturday.

Fans can get autographs from former Dallas Cowboys Jay Novacek, Larry Brown and Bradie James between 2 and 6 p.m. Brown played at TCU.

The event is located near the intersection of Collins and Slaughter streets. The tour also will make a stop at SMU’s Gerald J. Ford Stadium from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday before the Mustangs host Texas Tech.

Quotable

“No. Even if he did I wouldn’t tell you.” — TCU coach Gary Patterson on whether quarterback Trevone Boykin has worked out at any other positions this month
