The Lady Lions of Weatherford Christian School played their first game of the season at home against Grace Christian Academy and came away with a hard-fought win, 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.After taking a quick lead in the first set, 9-3, WCS lost both momentum and the set, 19-25 in the Aug. 20 match.With the help of seniors Kennedy Combs and Ashleigh Garvin, the Lady Lions did not shut down. WCS then took the match by winning three straight sets.Garvin had a “great game” with four aces on 20 serves and only one setting error. Combs finished the game with 11 kills and two aces. Sophomore Hannah Floyd had three aces on 10 serves and sophomore Judy Pope, a first year player, had four kills.“Tonight’s game was a much better effort,” Coach Debby Steensma said. “The girls remained determined and did not quit. Kennedy is a great communicator on the court and she has helped provide the team with more communication. “Right now, whether it is serving or setting the ball, we rely on Ashleigh. She is the backbone of our team. As the season progresses, we will continue to improve all the time.”WCS will travel to Flower Mound on Thursday to face Grace Christian Academy again. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
