TCU defensive end Devonte Fields will suit up and be on the sidelines against LSU, but coach Gary Patterson declined to say whether his star is still suspended.

“You’ll find out at game time,” Patterson said Tuesday during his media luncheon.

Patterson said his track record on similar personnel issues “speaks for itself,” indicating that Fields is unlikely to play in the opener at 8 p.m. Saturday at AT&T Stadium.

Fields is listed atop the newly released depth chart with only an “or” separating him from Matt Anderson. Coaches use “or” on depth charts to indicate that either player could start the game.

Patterson said he chose to list Fields as a potential starter to confuse LSU, but a source close to the situation said Fields won’t be playing.

Patterson hinted on Tuesday that Fields is unlikely to see any action Saturday but was happy with how the sophomore from Arlington Martin High School has handled himself since he broke unspecified team rules in May.

“He’s already done everything the university asked him to do,” Patterson said. “The key for me is it’s still about teaching life lessons. If you’re a betting man, and you know me, you probably know which way to bet.”

Fields was named the Associated Press Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2012, leading the team with 181/2 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. Fields also earned multiple freshman All-America team honors.

Underdog status

TCU is a 4.5-point underdog against LSU, according to oddsmakers, but that’s business as usual for the Horned Frogs when they’ve faced a high-profile opponent.

That’s usually how Gary Patterson and his players like it.

“I’d say we feel like the underdog,” tight end Stephen Bryant said. “It’s LSU, the history, the great games, the players. We wouldn’t have it any other way. You go into it as the underdog and show people what you’ve got and come out with a victory and then people are like, ‘wow, they really do have it.’”

Patterson said he likes the underdog role but that’s not necessarily how he speaks to his team in private.

“How you talk to your team and how I talk to [the media] is different,” he said.

Quotable

“Even as a coach, you know you need to be a lot more perfect. Do you need five in the box to stop the run or do you need six? Do you need seven in the box? Eight in the box? Nine in the box? I’d say with LSU you need 11. They come at you all day long.” — TCU coach Gary Patterson on the challenge of facing LSU
