Eats Beat: Max’s will dive into the Fort Worth brunch scene

Fort Worth has new cafes for brunch — and even a new brunch day.

Max’s Wine Dive will serve brunch Fridays through Sundays when the Houston-based bistro chain opens soon on West Seventh Street.

More on that later. First, a sunrise update from Vickery Blvd. Cafe.

Former hotel chef Curtis James has refreshed the 39-year-old cafe with new recipes, breakfast specials and some of the best cooking since the days of Burdav’s.

The breakfast biscuits and homemade pies have been improved on the daily specials. Sunday breakfasts include fresh-squeezed orange juice and specialties such as eggs Benedict or a Louisiana eggs Creole.

A Tex-Mex omelet comes with Vickery’s thick homemade chili — a neighborhood tradition from railroad days — plus cheese and jalapeños. Recent specials have included German apple pancakes or tres leches French toast.

Pies include buttermilk and pecan as well as German chocolate, a holdover from past owners.

James wrote by email that he hopes to remodel the restaurant, operated by the Burkhalter and Davis families as Burdav’s from 1974 to 2003.

The brunch zone

Max’s Wine Dive will join several new brunch restaurants near the Cultural District and parks.

Max’s, close to opening at 2421 W. Seventh St., has a signature fried-chicken-and-champagne brunch that will start a day early, on Fridays. Chef Stefon Rishel was with a Dallas resort and will mix Max’s menu with his own dishes, including cheeses from the local Magnolia Cheese Co.

Also now brunchable nearby:

The new Pacific Table, at 9 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays, with dishes such as lemon ricotta pancakes or lobster eggs Benedict; 1600 S. University Drive, (near the familiar Blue Mesa Grill brunch).

Café Modern at the Modern Art Museum serves brunch at 10 a.m. both weekend days, featuring peach French toast or a bacon-lettuce-and-tomato eggs Benedict, plus desserts including a chocolate-salted caramel souffle or butterscotch-whiskey pudding; 3200 Darnell St., 817-840-2157,

In the West 7th shops, Brownstone Kitchen and Bar, Waters, Reservoir, Hacienda San Miguel and Fred’s Texas Cafe all serve brunch, along with the old nearby favorite Pour House. In Montgomery Plaza, Gloria’s and Deluxe Bar & Grille serve brunch, along with neighbors M&O Station Grill and Daybreak Cafe.

Wise price

The Taste of Wise (County) is different from other dining festivals.

For one thing, it’s free.

The Decatur Civic Center will fill Thursday night for samples and bites from 12 restaurants, including Rock City Burgers and Atomic Rooster from Bridgeport and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop and Rooster’s Roadhouse from Decatur.
