The Lonnquist Notes Last year we went 64-16, so there are high expectations, but there are also a lot of new faces this season. So we’re going to work hard and make sure we just take it a half-dozen or so games at a time.

When we began this high school football picks column in 2012, the one thing we didn’t predict was the success that followed. After Carroll’s Class 5A Region I setback to DeSoto, this space finished 64-16, a .800 winning percentage.

Every year is different, so you don’t assume anything. You just trust you will be as successful as possible. That sounds like coach speak, doesn’t it?

But the good thing is that the 2013 high school football season starts on Thursday. Of course, this is the second year of the two-year agreement with the non-district schedules. It’s the return game.

Let’s go!

Keller Fossil Ridge at Grapevine, 7 p.m. Thursday, Mustang-Panther Stadium, Grapevine: Both of these teams are coming off disappointing seasons. Each went 3-7. Offensive questions face both. Can either find a trustworthy running back? Does either have a quality lead receiver? The Mustangs have more questions at quarterback than Fossil Ridge. Fossil Ridge at least knows something about its QB in Jacob Gnacinski. That’s why I give KFR the edge.

Prediction: Fossil Ridge 21, Grapevine 10

Prosper at Keller, 7 p.m. Thursday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: Keller coach Carl Stralow won’t forget his 2012 debut. It was a disaster as the Eagles won handily. But the rosters have flipped. Prosper QB Davis Webb could be starting for Texas Tech on Friday at SMU. Keller’s defense seems to have some swagger. And there’s a great 1-2 offensive punch in QB Hunter McEarchen and RB Dalton Mills. The surprise team of 2013 starts it off right.

Prediction: Keller 24, Prosper 19

Byron Nelson at Keller Timber Creek, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: The Bobcats are 3-0 all-time against the Falcons. What does that mean? Nothing. But when these schools opened the same year, it was clear BN had a bit of a talent edge. With a secondary that’s pretty solid for the Bobcats and the returning sophomore of the year in RB Courtney Miles, I think Nelson will still have enough.

Prediction: Byron Nelson 27, Timber Creek 10

Duncanville at Colleyville Heritage, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Mustang-Panther Stadium, Grapevine: Last year’s CHHS win was greeted with pretty poor visitor accommodations. While the offense got off to a slow start, the defense punished Duncanville, 20-3. Duncanville is trying to rebound from a disappointing 3-7 2012 season. But Colleyville Heritage has owned this series. The reports on QB Griffin Pickler are good and RB Demarco Corbin could have a big year.

Prediction: Colleyville Heritage 23, Duncanville 14

Grand Prairie at Justin Northwest, 7:30 Northwest ISD Complex, Justin: Are we building up the Texans too much? Some might say yes, but with the core of the defense returning and a quarterback in Jesse Drummer who might be better than predecessor Draze Lawliss was, this program wants to become a big boy. Grand Prairie went 2-8 in 2012.

Prediction: Northwest 42, Grand Prairie 7

Allen at Carroll, 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dragon Stadium, Southlake: This is such a tough game to call. The No. 1 Eagles against the No. 5 Dragons. Carroll is really good on defense and really good on offense. Allen is really good on offense and defense. These are kids and you know the Carroll returners are burning for payback after the 24-0 debacle in 2012 in Collin County. They won’t say it publicly, but they are. I’m just going with my gut and realizing I’m not endearing myself to the Dragon Nation as I take over this beat.

Prediction: Allen 25, Carroll 20

Flower Mound at Keller Central, 10:30 a.m., Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: Breakfast with Central coach Bart Helsley. Check the concession stands for breakfast tacos. Wow, this is early. Dane Johnson is trying to build something with the Jaguars. Helsley has a little more of a physical football team. But with the Chargers, the games will be ugly. Still, they will find a way.

Prediction: Keller Central 19, Flower Mound 14
