Haltom

District 4-5A

Coach: Scot Hafley

Last Season: 2-8 (1-6 in District 4-5A)

Key Players: LB Corderius Cooksey (6-2, 190), LB Quinton Smithy (6-2, 190), QB Jon Armstrong (6-0, 185), DL Marc Aguilar, DL Kalib Ringwald, DL Richard Givans, LB Coy Casbeer, DB Alex Ortiz, RB Dandre Reed

The big picture: Despite injuries to key players, including last year’s starting quarterback Travis Danford, coach Scot Hafley’s squad was just six points from a playoff berth. The 2012 Buffalos lost to Justin Northwest (24-21) and Keller Central (24-21). Haltom led six of their 10 games at halftime, but depth proved to be a problem down the stretch. Senior quarterback Jon Armstrong, who according to Hafley has waited patiently three years for this opportunity, has won the starting job and will be asked to lead an inexperienced offense.

Quotable: “We didn’t have the greatest season last year, but it’s all about overcoming adversity. We have a lot of team chemistry and some great players coming back so I think we’re going to have a good year and surprise some people.”

— Senior QB Jon Armstrong

“We’ve had a great off-season and saw tons of improvement. The kids have had a great attitude and have accepted every challenge we have given them. We have been giving them challenges in order to try to finish games.”

— Coach Scot Hafley

Notable: The last time the Buffalos finished a football season 2-8, they missed the playoffs by just one point. They rebounded the next season to finish second in 2009. One of their

two victories last season came against Richland.

— Greg Bogomol
