Colleyville Heritage

District 6-5A

Coach: Mike Fuller

Last season: 10-2 (6-1 in District), lost to Waco Midway in area playoff

Key players: OL Awais Charaniya (6-1, 295); QB Griffin Pickler (6-2, 200); WR Brett Bofinger (5-11, 160); WR Jake Newell (5-8, 165); S Jacob Sisk (6-0, 170); OLB Isaac Lee (5-11, 215); DB Braden Hunt (5-8, 180)

The big picture: Heritage spent three seasons enjoying the arm of Cody Thomas, who’s now in a battle for playing time at Oklahoma. The Panthers haven’t settled on a quarterback according to coach Mike Fuller, but he said senior Griffin Pickler has the edge “right now.” Fuller said Pickler has the strongest arm of the quarterbacks that he’s coached, but several things need to come together for him and the Heritage offense. Two juniors are battling as well for the starting job, Trevor Anderson and transfer Clayton Oliver from Oklahoma. The biggest challenge facing Heritage is the graduation of almost every skill position player that registered significant statistics last season. Of the receivers returning, only Brett Bofinger had more than 15 catches (18). Jake Newell will be counted on as an inside receiver, but had only one varsity reception last year. Even with last years’ prolific passing attack (over 4,200 yards), Heritage had 1,504 yards rushing. Last year’s reserves are key to the ground game this season. Junior Demarco Corbin had 59 carries for 324 yards and five touchdowns a year ago. The team does return three offensive lineman, including center Awais Charaniya. Defensively, the Panthers also return only three starters. Among them, safety Jacob Sisk had 79 tackles and five interceptions last season. He anchors a secondary that could be one of the best in the area as Braden Hunt also returns at corner. Hunt had 41 tackles and two picks in 2012. Linebacker Isaac Lee is back after recording 68 tackles, including eight for loss, last year.

Quotable: “If we had to play games in the spring, we wouldn’t have won one of them. It’s night and day now that we’re in training camp and we get better each day. The goal now is to sustain what we’ve learned ... and we should be ready to go at the start of the season.” — Coach Mike Fuller

Notable: Kaelin Deboskie, who had 1,280 receiving yards for Heritage last season, moved to Arizona in the spring.
