In the Aug. 13 edition, the letters “A secular compass” and “Abominable” suggest some impropriety in relying on “biblical” mores when it comes to what conduct should be endorsed or challenged in the public arena.

But what is the alternative? Relying only on atheistic principles? What gives them a leg up when it comes to desirable behavior?

Really there are two ways of looking at scriptural mandates. One is: God gave them. In which event, are we supposed to buck God?

Alternatively, they are the culmination of a couple of thousand years of accumulated human wisdom. Are we really supposed to jettison those in favor of the new whims of the present moment?
