Keller Central and Timber Creek appear to be trending in different directions heading into the 2013 season.Central is poised for another run at notching its first playoff victory, with their key skill player, quarterback Jake McClurg, returning. Timber Creek, on the other hand, might have more of an uphill battle than was expected in punching its second playoff ticket, a year after its first appearance, with key running back Cedric Dale’s transfer to Hebron. All four Keller schools should bunch on either side of the playoff line, but can both Central and Timber Creek find themselves the top two KISD schools? Here’s a closer look at both teams.2013 Falcons Coach: Kevin Golden 2012: 4-7 (4-3 in District 4-5A); Lost to Arlington in the 5A Division II bi-district round. Key returners: RB Amon Lindsay, DB Camden Ross, DB Aaron Townsend Outlook: Returning just three starters on both sides of the ball presents a lofty task for Golden, but the motivation is still there after the school’s first trip to the playoffs last season. “[The playoff trip was] huge because we tried to include the younger guys as much as we possibly could,” Golden said. “We took them to the game. We dressed out as many as we possibly could. Those guys got an extra week of practice. As far as I’m concerned, that was huge. It validates everything you say to them and the program and all the things you say to them in season.” Timber Creek will look to Lindsay to fill the void left by Dale’s transfer … Lindsay rushed for 272 yards on 69 carries last season … Golden also must replace quarterback Taylor Jones, but has a bounty of options in Anthony Millsap, Konner Pittman and Caleb Collins … “it’s actually a good thing,” Golden said. “They’re always competing. They’re always a little bit stressed and trying to make the most of their opportunities.” Timber Creek’s strength will be its defensive secondary, led by Aaron Towsend and Grant Fudge. “Hopefully those guys can show some leadership and get those front guys where they need to be quicker,” Golden said of his DBs.2013 Chargers Coach: Bart Helsley 2012: 6-5 (4-3 in District 4-5A); Lost to Arlington Bowie in the 5A Division I bi-district round. Key returners: DT T.J. Tauaalo, QB Jake McClurg, K Hunter Morrow, RB/DB Justin Manuatu Outlook: Central has experience in its favor, returning 14 starters from last season, including McClurg … The rising junior threw for 885 yards and 7 touchdowns in his sophomore season and also led the team in rushing, posting 960 yards on the ground on 204 carries.Manuatu will take a few of those carries from the running back position, but will hold down Central’s defensive secondary at safety … Should Central’s quest for its first playoff victory come down to a field goal, their in capable hands (or feet) with senior kicker Hunter Morrow.
