An Azle man was struck and killed early Saturday by a pickup truck as he crossed the westbound lanes of Texas 199.

The driver of the truck fled the scene, according to a news release by Cpl. Zachary Hatton, police spokesman.

Donald Buerger, 35, died at 2:56 a.m., according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner.

Azle police were called to the 1200 block of Texas 199, known as Jacksboro Highway, by a motorist who witnessed the hit-and-run.

The witness told police that he nearly collided with the pedestrian but said the man was hit by a driver traveling behind him. No other description was given to police other than the vehicle was possibly a pickup truck.

Buerger was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Azle police are still investigating and trying to locate the driver. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Rogers at 817-444-3221.
