Coach: Bill Patterson. Last season: 8-3 (6-1 in District), lost to Arlington Lamar in bi-district.
Key players: QB Jesse Drummer (6-2, 225); QB/RB Dusty Cloud (6-0, 185); WR Emmanuel Moore (6-0, 175); WR Chase Morrison (5-7, 160); DT Joe Gonzales (5-9, 225); MLB Duke Kicinski (6-2, 210); LB Jacob Parker (5-10, 175); DB Reggie McDaniel (5-8, 165).
The big picture: Casual observers failed to notice the Texans had the top-ranked defense in their district last season. They gave up an average of 250 yards per game last season and those yards came fairly balanced between running and passing. Northwest is close to reaping the benefits of upgrades to the program. The Texans will welcome out-of-state transfer Jesse Drummer, who spent the past two seasons playing football in Illinois. Coach Bill Patterson said the starting job is up for grabs, but that returning backup Dusty Cloud is a dual threat who might be one of the area’s top running backs as well. Whichever QB is chucking it, Patterson pointed to four or potentially five talented receivers who could help the Texans finally put together a postseason run.
Quotable: “You’d like to think that we are getting better at this point. We qualified for state 7-on-7 this year and won our pool, so I’d say we have the chance to really turn a corner. I was disappointed in our coaching effort against Lamar last season, and I really felt like there were some things that we needed to do differently. It has a lot to do with confidence and I think the kids have that now.”
— Coach Bill Patterson
Notable: The defense has six returning starters, but nine players that saw considerable playing time last season.
