A 19-year-old man looking for dinner instead discovered his mother’s body in a freezer at their Mineral Wells home, officials said Friday.

There is currently no indication that the Thursday evening death involved foul play, Mineral Wells Police Chief Dean Sullivan said.

Sullivan said officers were called to the house at the intersection of S..E. 19th Street and S.E. 14th Avenue about 6 p.m. on a report of a deceased person.

“Her son went to the freezer and made the startling discovery of his mom inside,” Sullivan said.

The woman has been identified as Shannon Herrin Huddleton, 38.

Sullivan said Friday afternoon that Huddleton had no obvious signs of trauma, but that the woman’s cause and manner of death remain pending Friday.

“There’s still more questions than there are answers but what we know at this point is there doesn’t appear to be outward signs of foul play involved,” Sullivan said. “We just really have to await the results of the more comprehensive autopsy and report to really bring some closure in determining what occurred.”

Sullivan said the freezer, located in the garage of the residence, is chest-style with the door on top and contained some food.

“It’s not extremely large but it’s not a compact one,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said “there’s all kinds of possibilities” how the woman may have ended up in the freezer, including accidentally falling in while reaching in for something and not being able to get out.

“At this point, our investigation will remain open as an unexplained, unusual circumstance death pending a more definitive determination on the cause and manner of death,” he said.

Sullivan said police have questioned two other people who were inside the residence when the son made the discovery Thursday.

He said investigators are also questioning other relatives, friends and neighbors to try and determine a time-line leading up to the discovery.

Though a time of death is not yet know, Sullivan said investigators have learned that Huddleton has been seen alive earlier Thursday by relatives.

Huddleton’s husband was arrested Friday on a parole violation warrant but Sullivan said the arrest was unrelated to the investigation of his wife’s death.
