Trophy Club Nelson
Coach: Brian Polk
Last season: 7-3 (4-3 in district), failed to make playoffs
Key players: OL Anders Huizenga (6-5, 295); DL/OL Skyler Reneau (6-2, 250); RB Courtney Miles (5-11, 185); DL Grant Lanza (6-4, 230); DB Jailen Garrett (5-11, 178)
The big picture: Nelson only returns six starters after losing 32 seniors. The Bobcats graduated several from the defensive side and how the newcomers react to varsity football is the question mark. On offense, finding skill-position starters to operate behind one of the better offensive lines in the state is the first priority. The line is anchored by senior Anders Huizenga, with former tackle Skyler Reneau likely to jump to defensive end. Courtney Miles rushed for 410 yards and five touchdowns on 67 carries last season as the 5-4A offensive sophomore of the year. Senior QB Esteban Ortega, who split time at the position last season before an injury, takes the reins full time after completing just 14 passes for 245 yards in 2012. Ortega also ran for 245 yards and five touchdowns. Senior Jordan Diamond had 14 catches for 247 yards and two scores a year ago.
Quotable: “I don’t think there’s any question that we can lean on our offensive and defensive lines; we have to. We have to be that team that controls the line of scrimmage in order to do the things we think can take us deep in the playoffs.” — Coach Brian Polk
Notable: Nelson was the odd team out last season in the playoff race after finishing 4-3 in district in a three-way tie for third place. Target Week 9 as the biggest game on the schedule, an away date with Azle, which beat Nelson 23-14 at home last year.
