Take backyard play equipment to the next level with luxury play sets, playhouses and treehouses that make that simple swing set of yesteryear look quaint by comparison. Ranging from two-story playhouses that feature running water and electricity (yes, electricity!) to play sets equipped with any and every feature you could want, these over-the-top backyard structures are equal parts luxury and fun.

With claims that they make “the most luxurious playhouses in the world,” La Petite Maison truly takes the art of playhouse making to the next level. Every La Petite Maison playhouse is a hand-built, one-of-a-kind creation. The most requested playhouse amenities are lighting, electrical outlets, play kitchens and running water. And in case you wondered, La Petite Maison’s services don’t just end at playhouse building. Besides offering custom playhouse plans, the company also makes custom furniture and home accessories for your newly purchased playhouse. Starting at $9,000, La Petite Maison.

Ever wonder what it’s like to have a train in your back yard? Well, wonder no more. Part of Play Mor Swing Sets’ Choo Choo Engine Series, the train-shaped Whistle Blast play set takes fun up several notches with the help of entertaining features like a powder-coated firehouse pole, gangplank, steering wheel and scoop wave slide. Measuring 26 feet in length and 15 feet in width, the play set is made of No. 1-grade treated yellow pine and features smooth surfaces and rounded corners to help protect children’s hands and arms from splinters and abrasions. $10,127, Ulrich Barn Builders.

Describing himself as a semiretired architect, James Curvan of Terrell has been keeping himself busy designing and building custom playhouses and treehouses for families around the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Using mostly repurposed wood, Curvan begins each project by drawing the plans and creating a miniature scale model. One of Curvan’s most popular creations so far has been a 100-square-foot custom treehouse he designed and built for a couple in Dallas. Featured on Good Morning Texas, the multilevel treehouse has a rope ladder, climbing wall, twisting tube slide and a suspension bridge. Besides designing and building custom playhouses and treehouses, Curvan also will draw up custom plans for clients who wish to have someone else build their project but want a professional eye to design it. Price upon request, James Curvan.

Lilliput Play Homes’ Sassafras Castle is sure to be popular with little princes and princesses alike. Built to resemble a medieval fortress, the castle playhouse features an enclosed courtyard, an 8-foot-tall tower with a rock-climbing wall on one side, and a secret room. By far the castle’s best feature, the secret room is accessed through a concealed opening in the castle’s mock fireplace. Once inside, children can spy on others in the castle through the eyes (they conveniently slide open and shut) of the portrait hanging above the mantel. Besides selling signature playhouses, Lilliput Play Homes also offers to design and build custom playhouses and furniture. Starting at $6,999, Lilliput Play Homes.

Coppell-based Backyard Mansions is in the business of building one-of-a-kind playhouses. Owner David Verret not only designs and builds the playhouses, he personally delivers and installs them. With designs ranging from a traditional cottage to a Texas log cabin, customers can choose every detail of their playhouse down to the knob on the front door and the shutters on the house’s windows. But Backyard Mansions’ services don’t stop there. Besides building custom miniature furniture for your newly erected playhouse, Verret also offers a renovation service for previous customers looking to update their playhouses. Starting at $5,000, Backyard Mansions.

While it might not be a giant ship on the open sea, we’re certain your little swashbuckler will love the Pirate Playhouse by Kids Crooked House. Handmade with high-grade weather-tight exterior wooden siding, the rugged playhouse features a variety of cool details that include a custom mast and crow’s nest, porthole windows and bamboo detailing. The Pirate Playhouse is shipped unassembled and is designed for easy assembly. Besides selling signature playhouses, Kids Crooked House builds one-of-a-kind, crooked playhouses to customers’ specifications and has created playhouses for clients such as Yahoo and ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Starting at $4,099, Kids Crooked House.

Offering a souped-up version of the traditional swing set, Tree Frogs has taken any and every play set feature and put it into one over-the-top package. Measuring 18 feet wide and 35 feet long, the Quad Climber Playcenter offers a variety of fun features, including a tire swing, picnic table, monkey bars, rock wall, spiral slide and, of course, swings. The best part, though, might be the fact that you don’t have to worry about putting it all together yourself. Tree Frogs offers a $99 installation service for customers living within a 40-mile radius. $10,199, Tree Frogs.
