THERE AND BACK AGAIN

One hundred and forty years after Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days was first published, Oceania Cruises hatched the idea for a new cruise. This adventure takes significantly longer, 180 days — presumably because you don’t have your entire life savings riding on a bet that you can finish it in record-setting time. Of course, you’ll need all those days anyway, to see everything you can in the 89 ports of call in 44 countries on five continents the cruise will visit. How many ways do we love Marc Jacobs? About 120 — that’s the number of products that are included in the luxe label’s new cosmetics line, launching Aug. 9 at Sephora stores. Marc Jacobs Beauty boasts everything from eye shadow to makeup brushes to a patent-pending high-shine nail polish, but the biggest buzz we’ve heard surrounds the “Smart Complexion” foundation, the first gel-based formula to hit the market ($48). We’re loving the calligraphy pen-style “Magic Marc’er” liquid eyeliner, which dispenses a color so dark it’s called “blacquer” ($30). The line also includes products touted as “boy tested, girl approved,” including a refreshing lip balm with 18 SPF ($24) and a soft-hold grooming gel ($24) that tames even the unruliest eyebrows. SUSTAINABLE SWIMWEAR

Say you’re a designer at Ralph Lauren. Your twin brother works in private equity. You both love the beach, and you’re both looking for a new career challenge. If you’re Mike and Alex Faherty, you combine your talents (Wonder Twins, activate!) and form a lifestyle brand specializing in beach-ready basics and swimsuits for men and women. Launched this spring, the New York City-based Faherty Brand creates many of its signature garments, including its popular board shorts, from fabric that’s made primarily of recycled polyester from plastic bottles — up to eight 16-ounce plastic bottles get recycled with each bikini. A RUGGED RIDE

Bugaboo, the Dutch baby buggy brand beloved by celeb moms and royal mums (some reports say baby Prince George of Cambridge is riding around in one) has teamed up with Portland, Ore.-based Pendleton Woolen Mills to give a rugged edge to its streamlined Euro-style strollers. The new In True Spirits line of stroller accessories and blankets draws design inspiration from American Indian and Old West motifs, stripes and checks — the very styling that has made Pendleton an iconic American brand. CRAZY FOR CROI-DOUGH-NUTS

A confectionary phenomenon is sweeping the nation, as bakeries across America scramble to perfect their own versions of the trademarked New York City-born “Cronuts.” In May, Dominique Ansel Bakery launched the deep-fried doughnut made from croissant dough that’s pumped with pastry cream then glazed, drawing customers to form lines in hopes of a taste hours before opening. Lucky for us there’s a French pastry chef in town who has crafted his own rendition. Pierre Thilliez of Main Street Bistro & Bakery in Grapevine (to be renamed Bistro M come fall) launched Croi-Dough-Nuts last month and is filling them with creme brulee and glazing them with caramel. GARDEN VARIETY

Every gardener in the area knows that August is not a kind month to plants and lawn. Before throwing up your hands, try throwing down a bag of seashells. The makers of new Colored Shell Mulch tout many advantages of this wood- or rock-mulch alternative: “It is cooling for plant roots and the soil, prevents weed growth, will not attract any varmints, snakes or insects, lasts a minimum of five years and does not fade,” they say. It is a fire retardant, too. Florida-based creator Jeff Bisgrove, who founded the product after a cigar thrown into his wood mulch caught fire, says the eco-friendly seashells are naturally mined, then sized and processed with a nontoxic, water-based Sherwin-Williams paint product; they’re available in 22,000 colors. GREAT PERFORMANCES AHEAD

We couldn’t contain our excitement when the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra announced the guest pianists for its Great Performances Festival, Aug. 23-25 at Bass Hall. (And neither could others, as the orchestra has reported record ticket sales.) Beatrice Rana, Sean Chen and Alessandro Deljavan were three of our favorite competitors at the 2013 Cliburn Competition. The festival, this year called “From Russia With Love,” will be dedicated to the memory of Van Cliburn and will feature symphonies and concertos of two Russian composers — Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Indulge reached out to all three pianists, who have spent the rest of the summer trotting the globe for concerts, classes and other engagements.

Rana, the Cliburn silver medalist and audience award winner, will play Tchaikovsky’s famous Piano Concerto No. 1 in b-flat minor on Aug. 23. About returning to the Fort Worth stage, the 20-year-old Italian says: “It makes me feel honored and happy. Honored for the chance to take part in this wonderful tribute to Van Cliburn, especially since I will play what a lot of people know as ‘Van’s concerto.’ … Happy for the opportunity to meet again on the stage of Bass Hall the wonderful musicians of the Fort Worth Symphony and the incredible audience that gave me so much support with their vote during the competition.”

Deljavan, 26, a semifinalist and jury discretionary award-winner at the 2009 and 2013 Cliburn competitions, will join the orchestra for Rachmaninoff’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 2 in c minor on Aug. 24. He will be making his Fort Worth Symphony debut. From his home in Pescara, Italy, he emailed to say he was shocked and humbled to have been asked to play in the festival. “I am honored to be in the midst of [Cliburn award winners] and even more that I was chosen to honor the wonderful Van Cliburn,” he says.

Chen, the third-place Crystal Award winner, will repeat his performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in d minor — which he played as the rousing final concert of this year’s competition — on Aug. 25. The 24-year-old American pianist says he, too, is looking forward to a reunion with the symphony, his Cliburn friends and a Fort Worth audience. “Rachmaninoff’s Third is one of my favorite concerti, and it’ll be wonderful playing it, especially at a festival dedicated to Van,” he says. “I am also looking forward to seeing some of my fellow colleagues again.”
