Former Tiger shines at Heartland Classic

Former Mansfield High standout baseball player Hunter Hargrove helped lead Team Texas to a gold medal in the prestigious Heartland Classic in Norman, Okla., earlier this summer.

Hargrove, a North Central College signee, was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after batting .500 over the eight games, including a solo homer in the championship game.

Team Texas lost its first game to Georgia but went undefeated the rest of the way to capture its third consecutive title at the Heartland Classic, defeating Ohio 6-0 in the championship game.

Hall of Honor opens this weekend

The Mansfield ISD Athletic Hall of Honor will induct its inaugural class this Saturday at the MISD Performing Arts Center.

The first inductees will include: the late Vernon Newsom, who will receive the first and only Cornerstone Inductee Award; Michele Purgason, Distinguished Volunteer; Samantha Morrow, girls basketball coach; James L. Coble, student-athlete and coach; Royce Womble, student-athlete; Erin Grant, student-athlete; Brie Madden Rodman, student-athlete; and the 1998-1999 Mansfield High girls basketball state championship team.

Golf center opens new youth academy

Mansfield National Golf Center has a new golf academy for players ages 7-16. Instruction is available for any level of player, from beginner to novice or advanced. Classes are organized into seven skill levels and taught by a PGA golf professional.

Classes are twice per week, though single lessons per week can be accommodated.

Students in the program must pass a skills challenge to advance to the next level and the instruction includes character lessons focusing on trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. There’s also a scholarship program for graduates of the academy.

Youth baseball coaches meeting

The Mansfield Youth Baseball Association will hold its mandatory coaches meeting on Aug. 13 at the Church on Rush Creek – Mira Lagos Campus.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m., but coaches are encouraged to arrive at 6:30 to pick up baseballs, rosters and schedules.
