Keller school district officials are asking families to register online for 2013-14 bus service by Aug. 15.

In January, the district restored free bus service for students living more than two miles from campus, a practice that will continue this year. A limited number of Pay For Ride slots will be offered, but the number of paid routes is expected to go down, said Dana Chandler, director of transportation. Officials eliminated free busing in 2011 to cut costs, but the savings were less than expected.

Now, administrators want to maximize the amount of money they receive from the Texas Education Agency for transportation, Chandler said. Districts are reimbursed for about 16 to 18 percent of their costs for bus service beyond the two-mile radius.

TEA will deduct reimbursements if districts add extra stops or miles to routes for paying customers. Most stops within two miles of schools are being eliminated. Paid riders can still go to the nearest stop to board a bus, Chandler said. Where space is available, Pay For Ride will cost $75 per semester.

Last spring, about 5,000 free general education and 600 paying riders were using buses. Chandler expects at least 6,000 riders this fall as more parents take advantage of free service.

Officials are adding nine bus routes, two for district growth and the others to transport pre-kindergarten and bilingual students who live farther than two miles from their home campuses. Chandler said buses will operate on 122 routes.

Durham School Services, the district’s transportation provider, is still seeking additional bus drivers. Positions are part time and most operate on a split shift, picking up kids before and after school. For more information on becoming a bus driver, contact Chandler: dana.chandler@kellerisd.net.

The online registration process is new and is being operated by the Keller school district at a significant cost savings, Chandler said. The procedure is much more user friendly. To register, go to kellerisd.net and click on the link for 2013-14 bus service. Families without internet service can register in person at the Keller ISD Education Center, 350 Keller Pkwy.

Cards confirming registration will be mailed out the week of Aug. 19. School begins Aug. 27.
