TCU men’s basketball incoming freshman Karviar Shepherd, one of the nation’s most highly coveted recruits, has been cleared by the NCAA, coach Trent Johnson confirmed Friday.

Shepherd, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound center from Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, was in limbo a couple weeks ago when it was reported that the NCAA had ruled him ineligible because of academic issues with the school.

The news is big for the Horned Frogs, who are hoping the 2013 recruiting class, led by Shepherd, will help begin to turn the program around in Johnson’s second season as coach.

Shepherd previously was ruled a “non-qualifier,” meaning he did not meet the academic requirements for NCAA Division I athletics.

But Prime Prep Academy announced in January, via the school’s website, that its curriculum met NCAA guidelines.

Shepherd, ranked 77th in the class of 2013 by ESPN Recruiting Nation, is on the TCU campus and completed a summer school term, Johnson said.

Shepherd transferred to Prime Prep from Arlington Grace Prep for his senior year.
