Andrew Hudson looked dejected walking off the 18th hole of Colonial Country Club on Thursday.

He’d just capped the Fort Worth Junior Boys Championship with a 72nd-hole double bogey.

Fortunately, Hudson had 10 more shots to spare as his final-round 72 and 292 total blitzed the field in securing the title.

“Yeah, that stung a little,” Hudson said. “I hit a bad tee shot, had to punch out and then hit a bad chip and putt. I hadn’t done that all day.”

In fact, Hudson had four straight birdie putts on holes 14-17 coming in but only converted one.

It was indicative of how much control the soon-to-be University of North Texas freshman had of his game from tee to green.

Hudson began the day with a two-shot lead over Southlake’s Jorge Morillo. When Morillo looked up after the first hole, Hudson made eagle and extended his lead to four.

“I thought to myself that we still had 17 holes to play, but by the time we got to the back nine, he was in control,” Morillo said. “I’m happy that I hung in there, but Andrew really played great.”

For Hudson, it capped a strong week of golf over four very different golf courses. On Wednesday, his swing started to click around Shady Oaks, where he hit 16 greens on the day.

On the back nine Thursday, Hudson said he realized he was in control of the tournament and he started to fire at the hole locations.

After a bogey on 13, he missed an 8-foot birdie on 14 and then converted an 8-footer on the 15th after a nice wedge approach below the hole.

He hit a towering 6-iron to 7 feet on 16 before another well-played shot left an 8-foot birdie chance on 17.

Hudson didn’t make either, but there was little doubt at that point with an 11-shot lead going to the final hole.

William Mullins finished second with a 302 total, and three others finished another shot back. Zach Campbell was declared the third-place finisher after a scorecard playoff and a final-round 79.

“I just started to get in a groove today and was comfortable all the way around,” Hudson said. “It could have been really low as good as I hit it. I kind of thought about it on 18 that I might have a chance to win, but I just tried to talk myself into hitting a good shot.”
