5 types of home cooking

Running back Phillip Tanner grew up in Dallas. His family still lives there. He remembers growing up in an apartment, going on to play high school football in Dallas and coming to enjoy every part of the city. He talked about five things he liked most about his childhood in Dallas.

1 It’s a beautiful city.”

2 “Watching the Cowboys on Sunday.”

3 “The food, of course.” (Underrated Mexican food, he agrees).

4 “The public transportation. I didn’t have a car for a while, so just being able to get on the DART train or the DART bus was big.”

5 “The fair. You can’t pass up on the state fair. That’s one of the biggest things. People come from all over to come to the fair.”

Good ol’ ‘Dools’

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett drops hints now and then about how informal he can be. He’ll throw around a nickname, as he showed reporters Tuesday. Asked about receivers coach Derek Dooley, Garrett said, “I’ve known Dools for a long time.” Oh, sure. Dools. “He coached at SMU when I was playing for the Cowboys, and he used to come up to Coppell High School the third weekend of June. We had a three-day camp with 500 kids. So I knew what he was about way back when.” Good ol’ Dools.

Hard counts

Quarterback Tony Romo got ’em. He fooled the defense into two encroachment penalties on its first two snaps in Tuesday’s team practice. It might be an example of the headiness of his game that coach Jason Garrett and owner Jerry Jones keep talking about. The defense was lined up ready to blitz. Just like that, Romo got em. Twice.

Hard to admit

Tight end Jason Witten kind of clenched his teeth. He was asked a question about the running game last year, when the Cowboys ranked 31st in the league. It was almost like he was embarrassed to remember it. “Not only the 31st, but we couldn’t …” He hesitated and spit out the words: “We weren’t good at it, you know?” Then he turned optimistic again. “We’ve worked on it. Hopefully it will pay off.”

They said it

“If you’re a tight end coming into our tight end situation, you need to keep your mouth shut and listen and learn. You can become a better player. … To have Witt be the example for him, I think it will really, really be beneficial for him throughout his career. He’ll look back on it as a real blessing.” – Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, on Gavin Escobar learning under Jason Witten
