Mavericks have Brandan Wright back in the saddle

Brandan Wright always knew he was going to come back and play for the Dallas Mavericks. The 6-foot-10 center just didn’t know when his free-agent deal would be realized.

Fortunately for Wright, that part of the equation is behind him after he agreed Tuesday to a two-year, $10 million contract plus incentives that could exceed another $1 million. Wright said he’ll be paid $5 million this season and $5 million next season, and he expects to sign his contract soon.

“I’m satisfied,” Wright said. “Even though it’s a two-year deal, I’m looking forward to being part of this organization for a long time, even after this two-year deal is over. I’m just excited to get back out there and just be a part of this great organization.”

Wright was productive for the Mavs last year, averaging 8.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and a team-high 1.2 blocks in only 18 minutes per game. The six-year veteran also shot 59.7 percent from the field.

However, because the Mavericks finished the season 41-41 and missed the playoffs, Wright is eager to get back on the court so he can help right last season’s wrong.

“We fell below expectations last year, so we’ve got to get back on track,” Wright said. “The moves that have been made have been made to lean toward getting back to the playoffs and compete. I’m looking forward to getting back out there and proving what happened last year was a fluke.”

Wright watched from afar earlier this month as the Mavs missed out on the Dwight Howard sweepstakes. And he had no qualms with Howard choosing to sign a four-year, $88 million contract with the Houston Rockets instead of signing a similar contract with Dallas.

“It’s part of the game,” Wright said. “You miss out on guys, sometimes you get guys, sometimes you don’t. But you’ve got to be ready to reload and get who you can and be ready to roll and be ready to win with who you’ve got. It’s unfortunate, but that’s just how it goes sometimes.”

However, Wright is pleased with the off-season acquisitions of center Samuel Dalembert, point guard Jose Calderon and shooting guard Monta Ellis.

“I think we picked up some guys that are definitely proven in this league, been on playoff teams and have a lot of experience,” Wright said. “That’s just going to make us that much better. We’ll have a relatively new team again, but I think we’ll be able to come together a lot better this time.”

Ellis signs contract

Monta Ellis signed his three-year contract with the Mavericks on Tuesday worth between $25 to $30 million. Ellis, who started 82 games last season, averaged 19.2 points, six assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 steals in 37.5 minutes a game.
