Oklahoma

Coach: Bob Stoops (15th season, 149-37)

2012 record: 10-3

Season opener: Aug. 31 vs. Louisiana-Monroe

Key issues: As is the case for most Big 12 teams, OU must replace a graduated quarterback. … Redshirt junior Blake Bell is the obvious choice, playing in all 13 games last season in the Bell-dozer package. He rushed for 201 yards on 60 carries for 11 touchdowns in 2012. … Stoops said his defensive scheme last season was focused on coverage, which allowed for more rushing yards against the Sooners. OU was sixth in the conference in rushing defense and second in opponent first downs.

Tarrant area tie: LB/DE Rashod Favors (Fort Worth Dunbar). The redshirt junior recorded 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks in nine games last season.

Texas

Coach: Mack Brown (16th season, 150-43)

2012 record: 9-4

Season opener: Aug. 31 vs. New Mexico State

Key issues: Heading into his junior season, the question remains if David Ash is the best option at quarterback. … Ash started 12 of 13 games last season, throwing for 19 touchdowns. … Texas loses key veterans on defense in safety Kenny Vaccaro (New Orleans Saints) and defensive end Alex Okafor (Arizona Cardinals).

Tarrant area tie: RB Johnathan Gray (Aledo). As a freshman, Gray led Texas with 701 yards.

West Virginia

Coach: Dana Holgorsen (3rd season, 17-9)

2012 record: 7-6

Season opener: Aug. 31 vs. William and Mary

Key issues: West Virginia gained Florida State transfer quarterback Clint Trickett, who has 12 games of experience as a backup for the Seminoles. … Flower Mound’s Paul Millard enters his junior year coming off two seasons as West Virginia’s backup. He threw for 87 yards and two touchdowns last season. The Mountaineers should have a strong rushing game with juniors Andrew Buie (851 yards, seven touchdowns) and Dustin Garrison (207 yards, two touchdowns) returning.

Tarrant area tie: QB Paul Millard (Flower Mound). Millard struggled to find a college home despite passing for 4,491 yards and 47 touchdowns his senior year. He’s in the hunt for the starting role after spending the past two years as backup. He threw a 37-yard touchdown pass against Oklahoma State last season on a fourth-and-13 situation.

Iowa State

Coach: Paul Rhoads (5th season, 24-27)

2012 record: 6-7

Season opener: Aug. 31 vs. Northern Iowa

Key issues: Iowa State’s offense finished second to last in Big 12 play in scoring offense, rushing offense and passing offense. … Iowa State also finished second to last in conference play in third-down conversions (38.9 percent). … Quarterback Steele Jantz must be replaced and sophomore Sam Richardson is listed as the man for the job. He saw action in four games last year, throwing for 541 yards and eight touchdowns and rushing for 233 yards and a touchdown.

Tarrant area tie: Three Tarrant County products hold spots on the Iowa State roster this season: DB Kamari Syrie (Hurst L.D. Bell), DB Matt Swoyer (Southlake Carroll) and LB Brian Bonacci (Southlake Carroll).
