5 items of interest for Ware

Defensive end DeMarcus Ware made sure to have all the comforts of home when he arrived at camp Friday.

Here are five things he brought with him on the team’s 30-day stay:

1“I’ve got the Segway, because I need to get off my feet from working so hard in practice.”

2“I brought my guitar. Thirty minutes a day I get out there and practice it to take my mind off playing the game and get ready for the next day.”

3“I have to have my vitamins and nutrition things, because guess what? To handle the stress, you need to make sure you’re replenishing yourself.”

4“I needed my iPad, which is my playbook now. It helps me make sure that I’m always doing all my fundamentals, doing what I need to do.”

5“Of course, my cellphone goes everywhere I go, so I can communicate with my kids over FaceTime.”

Garrett speech viral

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett spent Monday morning as an Internet sensation.

His pre-training camp speech to the team was posted by Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, touted as a behind-the-scenes look at Garrett’s motivational ability. Garrett said it was just a routine “nuts-and-bolts” pre-camp address intended to motivate his team.

“What you try to do as a leader of any organization is provide perspective, inspiration, motivation, create a vision for your football team, create a vision for your organization and do everything you can to get the right people to help you accomplish that vision,” he said. “And you have to give them a path. You have to give them a structure. You’ve got to give them a road map. But you also have to give them some inspiration. You have to give them some motivation to get up each and every day to do the things they need to do to accomplish what that goal or vision is. So that’s my job. That’s our coaches’ job. I tell our guys all the time: if you’re a human being, you need inspiration, you need motivation. I don’t care who you are, how strong you are mentally. And it’s just part of what I believe I have to do, what our coaches need to do and really what our players need to do for each other.”

The access granted for the speech was unusual, and Garrett said it was “an organizational decision,” unwittingly drawing laughs from the assembled reporters. What he meant was, it was Jerry Jones’ idea.

“It certainly wasn’t my decision by itself. It was a collective decision,” Garrett said, smiling. “We had some good discussions. As you know, Peter King is starting a website with Sports Illustrated. He’s been a great friend to the NFL and a great friend to the Cowboys for years. We thought it was worthwhile there.”

Unlike any other

The Cowboys’ training camp attendance proves yet again why they are America’s Team.

The Cowboys drew 51,477 to training camp last year, including a one-day record 9,008 last Aug. 5. Their first practice of 2013 drew 6,614; 2,331 attended Monday.

“Kansas City has some good fans, some supportive fans,” said cornerback Brandon Carr, who played four seasons with the Chiefs before signing with the Cowboys as a free agent before the 2012 season. “But you know the Cowboys nation. It’s a different story. I see they added some more tents over here from last year, so I guess the crowd has picked up. It’s always exciting to play here. Last year was kind of an icebreaker, but this year I’m just I guess bathing in all of this and all these crazy fans that just have a passion for the Cowboys.”

He said it

“You’ve got to love coaching. You either love it or you like it. Gosh dang it, you better love it. If you like it, get in some other profession, OK?” — defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin on coaching at 73
