Darn Republicans

Jennifer Floyd Engel calls the Republican party “intellectually dishonest” for its pro-life stand, because it advocates less government (See: “Standing with Wendy and staying Republican,” Thursday).

If she had only pondered history she would have understood that this party has been interfering in people’s lives from the beginning.

The Republican Party had the temerity to say — to insist — that slaves were real people, contrary to the Dred Scott Supreme Court decision. It was the Democrats who insisted upon a right of people to keep “private property.”

Many of these Democrats were certainly personally opposed to slavery, but they boldly defended whites’ freedom to own slaves.

Today, Republicans are consistently beating the same drum, insisting that life in the womb is not the property of the woman who conceived them, and is certainly not part of the woman’s body but an individual human being with a right to life. Darn those Republicans.

Today it is as true as in 1860: If you want to maintain the right to dehumanize a group of people, vote Democratic.
