Five ways to double-speak

New technology pops up every day, it seems like. Sunday, it popped up on the practice field for the Dallas Cowboys.

Running back DeMarco Murray wore a helmet with a camera attached to the side during the afternoon practice. He happily showed it off to his teammates.

He didn’t talk to reporters afterward, but running backs coach Gary Brown was asked about it. Here are the top five things he said about it in a play-coy-with-reporters session:

1. “I didn’t know anything about it. You can ask that man. I didn’t even know anything about it.”

2. “Honestly, I don’t want to speculate. It was kind of cool-looking, but I don’t want to speculate what it was for.”

3. “I didn’t even know it was a coaching tool. If I looked at it and found out, maybe I can say, ‘Hey, we can use that for ourselves.’ But until I realize what it’s for, I don’t really know what to say about it.”

4. “I thought it was pretty cool. I don’t know what it was for, again. But we’ll see. I’ll find out eventually, and I’ll let you know.”

5. “You’ve got to see what you’re going to do. You’ve got to be able to read defenses, understand the front and do what you need to do. So it’s important.”

Football weather

The afternoon practice began in 66-degree weather, and it ended in 64-degree weather. A stray raindrop fell here or there the entire afternoon. The sun never did appear. It actually felt like a playoff atmosphere. What’s next? Something close to 70 the rest of the week, but still cloudy.

Oxnard appreciation

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones presented the Oxnard mayor with a Cowboys jersey bearing the No. 13 as thanks for another year of training camp. “I don’t know how you feel about the No. 13,” Jones said. “I was born in El Segundo, Calif., and 13 was my birthday. So I know it’s good luck for some folks.”

A Kiffin crowd

New defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin is already a crowd favorite, and don’t think he doesn’t know it. He stopped a shuttle drill along the fence to fire up the crowd. “Timeout!” he said and stopped the players. Then he waved for noise from the crowd and re-started the drill.

He said it

“I feel like the expectations for me are very high, not only from myself, but from the coaches, you know. They’re looking for something way more than I put out last year. I’m looking for that from myself. I feel like I can go out and do that.”

— Morris Claiborne, cornerback
