Rangers not any closer to Matt Garza trade

Another day passed Saturday without the Texas Rangers striking a trade for Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza, and now a deal that club officials believed was imminent might not happen at all.

A team official sounded that warning Friday night, after talks stalled as medical reports of the involved players were picked over. Negotiations had advanced far enough that some in the organization expected Garza would be the Rangers’ starting pitcher Saturday.

Instead, no significant progress was being made Saturday as right-hander Ross Wolf started against the Baltimore Orioles, and the Rangers were left considering other options.

“That process will take care of itself,” manager Ron Washington said.

General manager Jon Daniels does the heavy lifting in trade talks, and he declined comment.

No matter what happens with Garza, the Rangers want to add a starting pitcher to their injury-ravaged rotation and a right-handed bat.

Some with the club believe that White Sox righty Jake Peavy is a better option. The Rangers watched him come off the disabled list Saturday and allow two earned runs in six innings against Atlanta.

White Sox outfielder Alex Rios is also available, and he would fill the Rangers’ need for a right-handed bat. He and Peavy are under contract for next season, and Peavy has a vesting option at $15 million in 2015 that seems easily attainable.

Seattle’s switch-hitting designated hitter, Kendrys Morales, is another possible bat the Rangers could try to add. Morales, a free agent after the season, has 10 career homers in 36 games at Rangers Ballpark.

The Rangers have the prospects to make a deal. Four had been packaged to send to the Cubs for Garza and likely a second player, but only one of them, right-hander C.J. Edwards, has been injury free the past two years.

Potentially of more concern were the recent maladies of third baseman Mike Olt and right-hander Neil Ramirez.

Olt was plunked on the head in November while playing in the Dominican Republic, and was shut down at Triple A Round Rock in April by vision problems.

Ramirez hasn’t been on the disabled list at Double A Frisco, but he missed a start recently because of shoulder soreness and has dealt with arm fatigue each of the past two seasons.
