NAACP chapters at three major area universities organized what was billed as a “peaceful protest for justice” Thursday evening in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida. The protesters gathered on the Library Mall at the University of Texas at Arlington. Chapters at the University of North Texas and TCU also participated. The national NAACP has called on the U.S. Justice Department to pursue criminal civil rights charges against Zimmerman, 29, for shooting Martin on Feb. 26, 2012. Zimmerman’s acquittal on Saturday sparked a number of protests across the country.
