The NFL is reviewing Josh Brent’s status with the Dallas Cowboys and should have a decision whether to suspended him before the team heads to training camp July 19, a spokesman said.

Brent is still on the Cowboys’ roster while awaiting his September trial on an intoxication manslaughter charge in the death of teammate Jerry Brown, who was a passenger in Brent’s car when it crashed Dec. 8 in Irving.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell could suspend Brent under the terms of the personal conduct policy.

Action by the NFL is necessary because Brent is listed as an active member on the Cowboys’ roster and is permitted to report to training camp absent a suspension.

The Cowboys never expected Brent to play this season and could have released him but have been waiting on an NFL ruling so they can retain his rights, according to a source.

Brent was released from jail on Sunday after spending 11 days there for violating the terms of his pretrial release by twice testing positive for marijuana.

Under the terms of his most recent release, Brent must wear a drug patch, continue his previous alcohol monitoring and is not allowed to drive.

His trial is set for Sept. 23. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
