Seguin, Horcoff welcomed to Big D amid Twitter controversy

At 23, Mike Modano moved to Dallas with the Stars franchise. He brought with him a wealth of NHL experience that was uncommon for a player his age.

He also made his fair share of mistakes on and off the ice and said he is glad social media had yet to be invented.

“Thank God those things weren’t around when I was 21 or there would have been a lot of damage control,” Modano said.

The Stars spent most of Tuesday’s introductory press conference for recent trade acquisitions Tyler Seguin and Shawn Horcoff spinning damage control after an anti-gay slur was posted Saturday on Seguin’s Twitter feed.

Seguin has shut down his Twitter account, which the 21-year-old said was hacked, along with other online accounts.

“It didn’t feel good that my name was out there saying negative things and I want to apologize to anyone who was hurt by what I said and I’m happy to be moving on,” Seguin said.

“With the Twitter stuff, it was impeccable timing for all that to happen and if I heard someone else say that their Twitter was hacked, I wouldn’t think they mean it.”

However, Modano said he believed Seguin’s story and added that he sees a lot of himself in the NHL standout, who has just three seasons under his belt.

“He’s young and engaging and that’s what fans really like here — the access and the personalities of athletes in this town,” said Modano, who is an executive adviser for the Stars. “I think in the long run, in eight or 10 years, you can say this is one of the better moves this team has made in a long time.”

Seguin said he is concerned about earning the respect of his teammates, Stars’ management and, most important, the fans.

Seguin said he hopes to use Modano as a resource for wisdom on being a young star in the league. He also has former Boston teammate Mark Recchi in the organization. Recchi is an adviser to the general manager.

Sitting to Seguin’s right Tuesday was another resource Seguin and many of the young players will lean on throughout the season: former Edmonton Oiler’s captain Horcoff, 34.

Horcoff donned his green Stars jersey, displaying his chosen number 10, which was worn by former captain Brendon Morrow.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Brendon and I played with him at a world championship,” Horcoff said. “We’re in a little bit in the same situations, where we were both with an organization for so long and it was time for a change. I’m aware of the significance of the number here and I’ll do anything I can to keep that significance going.”

Seguin picked the number 91, keeping a personal tradition of the number 9, but adding a new flair, he said.

In his eyes, the number represents what Stars’ management hopes he will be in the green, silver and black.

“I feel like it’s a sniper number,” he said.
