The Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Lakers have made a final push to sign free-agent center Dwight Howard.

Rockets power forward Chandler Parsons, a longtime friend of Howard, keeps up with the developments.

Parsons participated in Dirk Nowitzki’s Heroes Baseball Celebrity Classic last weekend in Frisco.

What’s your take on Howard potentially coming to Houston? Well obviously, everyone wants him. And Dwight is the best center in the NBA when he’s healthy. I think it’s really pretty open, and it’s going to be an exciting month.

Have you and Dirk talked about which team has the best chance of getting Howard? Yeah, we’ve already talked about it some, but I’m sure I’m a better recruiter than Dirk.

How do you feel the Rockets did in the draft this year? I thought we did really well. We got a great shooter in Isaiah Canaan. He’s a strong point guard and very efficient in his college career. I’m happy with it and looking forward to seeing what he can do.

What’s on your agenda for the off-season? I’ve been grinding all summer with my trainers in Orlando and Los Angeles. This is the first real break I’ve had where I can let my hair down and have some fun.

Is there something specific you’re working on this summer to help you improve for next season? I want to put on 10-15 pounds, which I’ve already put on 8. Just want to keep working on my all-around game, my jump shot and ball handling, being able to facilitate next year. Just working all around so I can continue to be versatile.

How close do you think the Rockets are to being an elite team in the league again? I think we’re right there. Last year, we only made it to the first round, but we gave the Thunder a run for their money, and we’re the youngest team in the league. The potential is there and I think the sky’s the limit. We’ve got a bunch of good dudes that really like each other and like playing with each other.
