The Dallas Mavericks are in talks with the Boston Celtics to pursue point guard Rajon Rondo, according to a source close to the situation.

But the source said that no deal involving Rondo would occur unless the Mavericks were able to acquire Dwight Howard. That’s because of salary cap ramifications.

Howard, the Los Angeles Lakers center who will be a free agent on Monday, reportedly has narrowed his free agent destinations down to the Mavs and Houston Rockets. But the Atlanta Hawks and Lakers are still in the mix, too.

The Rockets are slated to be the first to meet with Howard — according to reports — as soon as the clock strikes 11:01 p.m. CDT on Sunday. After that, the Mavs, led by owner Mark Cuban and forward Dirk Nowitzki, will get their shot on Tuesday at trying to convince Howard to pick the Mavericks.

All of the meetings with Howard will take place in Los Angeles.

Rondo is a three-time All-Star who missed last season after tearing a knee ligament.
