Pass the mint juleps and the corn pone. The Supreme Court has joined Gov. Rick Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in denying full access to the polls to those of certain racial persuasions and ethnic origins.

We’re in “the land of cotton” and “old times there are not forgotten.” But do we want to stay there? Let’s drag our nation back into 2013. It’s a troubled year, to be sure, but a year of an African-American president of rare intelligence and balance, in weighing what’s best for all of us, not just the pale-skinned, privileged few.
