A suspected shoplifter who allegedly assaulted a police officer at Hulen Mall Tuesday, led police on a high-speed chase that ended with a multi-vehicle wreck, according to reports.

The incident began shortly before 6 p.m. when an officer working off-duty security was alerted to a possible theft, said Sgt. Kelly Peel, police spokesman.

But officer found the suspected thief, who fought back and fled to waiting getaway car in the mall parking lot, driven by another man, Peel said.

A chase ensued.

Peel said it “continued east on (Interstate 20) and ended at I-20 and Wichita (Street) when the suspects rammed multiple vehicles on the freeway.’

“One of the suspects,” Peel said, “was ejected from the getaway car.”

Matt Zavadsky, MedStar spokesman, said two men were taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, one in critical condition, the other with non-life threatening injuries.

Five other people were treated and released at the scene, Zavadsky said.

The suspects names were unavailable late Tuesday, but Peel said the shoplifting suspect faced multiple charges.

Included are assault on a peace officer, theft, evading arrest/detention, resisting arrest and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. In this case, the weapon is the getaway car.
