Grand Prairie police said an apartment resident admitted shooting two men, one fatally, whom he claimed were trying to break into his flat Friday. Narcotics were found in the vehicle apparently used by the pair.

The shooting occurred at The Fairways complex on Texas 360 north of Interstate 30, police spokesman Lyle Gensler said in a news release.

The resident did not immediately call police but turned himself in on Saturday morning and was released after his account was recorded, Gensler said. Officers had been dispatched to the apartments after numerous 911 calls were received about 9:45 p.m. from people who heard a disturbance followed by gunfire.

Police arrived to find one man dead in a stairwell and a blood trail leading away from the crime scene, indicating that another person fled the area with a wound.

The medical examiner had not released the man’s name or cause of death by Saturday evening.

Detectives were trying to develop a time line of what the victim did in the hours and moments leading up to his death.

After obtaining a search warrant on the pair’s vehicle, officers found narcotics and other evidence tghat might help identify the injured man who fled.

The armed resident was released and is cooperating with Grand Prairie police, Gensler said.
