The natural order

Equal signs (=) have been showing up in social media recently advocating recognition of same-sex marriage.

This implies a logical process, so let’s do the math. Let man = a; let woman = b; let marriage = c. Therefore a + b = c.

This is, and has been, considered a valid equation for more than 2,000 years.

Now does a + a = c? Or b + b?

If it’s only equal legal status that same-sex couples seek, let it be granted with the exception of adoption rights. But please use different labels.

Words like marriage, husband and wife should not become ambiguous. Let wordsmiths come up with a term that truthfully and respectfully describes same-sex unions.

Holding this position isn’t being disrespectful or hateful. It’s just recognizing and honoring the self-evident truths that exist in the natural order of things.
