A man shot by Irving police Wednesday evening after he opened fire on the officers died Thursday morning at a Dallas hospital, police said.

Police identified the suspect as Uriel Juarez, 44, of Irving who was shot several times by two officers. He was pronounced dead at 7:14 a.m. Thursday at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.

The officers were not injured.

Police had stopped Juarez Wednesday evening after he was accused of threatening family members with a weapon.

Initially, police received reports that the man had made the threats and had driven away from an Irving residence.

Shortly before 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, patrol officers spotted a vehicle in the 1300 block of East Pioneer Drive that fit the description of one used by the suspect in the domestic call. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the man refused to stop.

After a brief pursuit, the suspect pulled into a driveway in the 600 block of Balleywood Road.

The suspect armed with a AK-47 got out of the vehicle and started shooting at the officers. The officers fired back, hitting the suspect several times.

The officers who were not identified were placed on administrative leave, authorities said.
