I would have guessed bleeding hearts Bud Kennedy or Bob Ray Sanders might have written the headline on the story about a woman being jailed 10 days for not paying more than $3,400 in traffic fines.

Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson seemed to side with the woman, which shouldn’t be his position. Another empathetic point is that the woman is a single parent. What does that have to do with her amassing $3,400 in fines?

My main question is, why wasn’t she stopped from driving sooner? Don’t the police check people they pull over?

One solution is to make these deadbeats — yes, deadbeats — do community service, one hour for every $10 owed. And not just some show-up job, but manual labor.

Last solution: Either jail, or the military.

That’s harsh treatment, but young and old alike today seem to think they’re exempt from everything, including work and traffic fines.
