New Orleans Saints outside linebacker Victor Butler tore an ACL after banging knees during Tuesday’s organized team activities and could miss the 2013 season, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Butler, who signed a two-year, $3 million contract in the off-season after spending his first four years with the Dallas Cowboys, will have surgery when swelling in his knee subsides and he could end up on injured reserve.

The injury occured when running back Mark Ingram caught a swing pass and collided with Butler, who eventually got to his feet but had to be helped off the field.

Butler’s signing with the Saints had reunited him with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, his coach in Dallas the past two seasons.

Goodell backs Redskins

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the Washington Redskins nickname is a “unifying force that stands for strength, courage, pride and respect.”

Goodell was responding to a letter from 10 members of Congress who want the name changed because it is offensive to many Native Americans.

He cited the nickname’s origins and polls that support its popularity. Goodell wrote that he understands the feelings surrounding it are complex and could change, but he also pointed out fan pride in the team’s heritage.

The name is the subject of a legal challenge from a group seeking to have the team lose its trademark protection.

Team owner Dan Snyder has vowed to never change the name.

• Vikings: Linebacker Chad Greenway had arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday and be sidelined until training camp.

• Redskins: Veteran receivers Devery Henderson and Donte’ Stallworth signed contracts.

• 49ers: Coach Jim Harbaugh said his rival Seattle Seahawks should “play by the rules” after they had six performance-enhancing drug suspensions in the past 18 months.

• Giants: Hakeem Nicks arrived at the New York Giants minicamp on Tuesday without an explanation for his surprising absence from the recent voluntary organized team activities. The Giants still are missing restricted free agent receiver Victor Cruz, who skipped organized team activities and was absent from minicamp because of protracted contract negotiations.
