The Brooklyn Nets hired Jason Kidd as their coach Wednesday, bringing the former star back to the franchise he led to its greatest NBA success.

Kidd, 40, retired earlier this month after one season with the New York Knicks, his 19th in the NBA. The Nets decided to hire him to replace P.J. Carlesimo despite his absence of coaching experience.

The job was offered to Kidd hours after the Nets met with Pacers assistant Brian Shaw.

“[Kidd] has the fire in the belly we need,” Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov said in a statement, “and has achieved as a player everything the Brooklyn Nets are striving to achieve.”

The move reunites Kidd with the franchise he led to consecutive NBA Finals in 2002-03, when they played in New Jersey. He won an NBA title with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011.

Review of block/charge

The NBA’s Competition Committee is recommending expanding instant replay to include late-game reviews of block/charge plays, the first time the league is considering reviewing judgment calls by a referee.
