Five TCU baseball players were selected in major league baseball’s first-year player draft Saturday.

In all, the Horned Frogs had six players drafted, including right-handed pitcher Andrew Mitchell, who was TCU’s top pick when he was taken by the White Sox in the fourth round Friday.

Left-handed pitcher Trevor Seidenberger was the first Frog taken Saturday. He was selected by the Brewers in the 12th round with the 362nd overall pick.

Infielder Paul Hendrix, who attended Birdville High School, went to the Indians in the 18th round. He’s the only player of the six who had been drafted before. The Indians selected him in the 32nd round in 2012.

Pitcher Stefan Crichton (Orioles), third baseman Jantzen Witte (Red Sox) and pitcher Nick Frey (Cardinals) were selected in the 23rd, 24th and 33rd rounds.

“I think all these guys are an example of the development system we have in place at TCU,” TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle said.

It was especially gratifying for Schlossnagle to see Witte, a fifth-year senior who played at Arlington Martin High School, get drafted by the Red Sox.

“That’s just an example of hard work rewarded,” Schlossnagle said. “I can’t imagine anyone being more deserving of getting a chance to extend his career than Jantzen Witte. He’s been through two or three tough injuries and been the consummate team player. I’m really excited for him.”

Although Witte is the only senior, all six players are expected to sign and end their TCU careers.

TCU fared well with its high school signees. Although the Frogs are likely to lose Plano West slugger and 24th overall pick Billy McKinney, two other highly coveted recruits are most likely headed to TCU.

Southlake Carroll left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander was drafted in the 23rd round by the Tigers. Jordan Kipper, a right-handed pitcher from Central Arizona College, was drafted in 2011 and 2012 but not this year after going 10-2 with a 1.32 ERA in 81 2/3 innings. Kipper is a former high school teammate of TCU slugger Kevin Cron.

Schlossnagle has had six or more players taken in a draft four times and had 46 players drafted in his 10 seasons at TCU.
