FORT WORTH Audubon Behavioral Healthcare and SRP Medical in Dallas, a real estate investment firm that specializes in developing healthcare properties, are building a geriatric psychiatric hospital in southwest Fort Worth.

Construction has begun on the single-story, 34,000-square-foot building at 6300 Overton Ridge Blvd., on the west side of the street, before it dead-ends at the Interstate 20 frontage road.

The 48-bed facility, which will care for people 55 and older, is expected to be completed in May, said Scott Wilson, managing principal of SRP Medical.

Audubon, based in East Texas, is a 4-year-old healthcare company that opened its first facilities in Longview and Lufkin about 18 months ago, CEO Bill Brown said.

Besides the Fort Worth center, it will start one in Plano in July and in Houston in September, he said.

The acute inpatient psychiatric hospitals specialize in treating emotional and behavioral disturbances, but they are not long-term facilities. Brown said patients stay an average of 14 to 16 days.

About half the patients are referrals from private physicians, and the rest are from nursing homes and hospital emergency rooms, he said.

Audubon’s decision to expand to Fort Worth was market-driven, he said.

“We research markets for concentrations of people who are over 55 and where there’s a real need for the services,” he said. “Most of Texas is underserved.”

Brown said the individualized treatment programs are intensive and involve a team of social workers, registered nurses, therapists, doctors and psychiatrists, as well as relatives.

SRP Medical, formerly part of The Staubach Co., was recently involved in developing the Methodist Hospital for Surgery Pavilion in Addison, the Kindred Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston and a Forest Park Medical Center expansion in Dallas, Wilson said.

Earlier this year, Sundance Behavioral Healthcare launched an expansion of its southwest Arlington hospital, and Haven Behavioral Healthcare said it will open a 36-bed geriatric psychiatric hospital in the Fort Worth Medical District.
