Former Dallas Star Mike Modano’s No. 9 has been immortalized by fans in Dallas for the past 20 years in the number of Modano jerseys seen walking around Stars’ home games.

Tuesday, the organization announced that Modano’s No. 9 will officially be enshrined in the American Airlines Center on March 8, 2014, when the Stars retire the number.

The Stars will face the Minnesota Wild, and the Dallas hockey legend said it will be an emotional night.

“When you have to address people and you’re all by yourself and you have to say a lot of things in a short amount of time and have to touch on a lot of memories and moments, it just kind of all hits you at once,” he said at the Stars’ uniform and logo rebranding event at the AT&T Performing Arts Center.

Modano said talks began with Stars president Jim Lites and owner Tom Gaglardi on the number retirement date at the end of this past season and were finalized at the beginning of the offseason, deciding between games against the Detroit Red Wings, Modano’s hometown team, and the Wild. The decision ultimately came down to getting the players back and going from the break created by the Winter Olympic Games.

In Modano’s 21 NHL seasons, 20 with the Stars, he tallied 1,359 points making him the greatest American-born scorer the NHL has seen. He was an eight-time All-Star and a sliver medal winner for Team USA in the 2002 games.

Stars come to town

The organization also announced Tuesday that it will host its four-day training camp at the Fort Worth Convention Center September 11-14.

The camp will feature practices on Thursday and Friday and will end with a scrimmage on Saturday, Sept 14. The events will be open to the public.

“I met with [Fort Worth mayor] Betsy Price and we talked about how important I thought Fort Worth is to our franchise,” Lites said. “Fort Worth has a great hockey history.”

The last time the Stars made an appearance in Fort Worth was the organization’s first season in Texas, 1993, when an exhibition game was held in the Convention Center.

New look

Ditching the black, white and gold which has been a staple of the Stars logo and uniforms since their move to Texas, the organization rebranded itself Tuesday, unveiling “Victory Green” and white uniforms with a silver star and “D” across the front.

“I’m thrilled. It’s at a major-league level and is a real simple, classic, great jersey,” stars owner Tom Gaglardi said.

The rebranding process took a year and combined the efforts of the organization, its fans, Reebok and the NHL. Those groups saw 236 variations before the decision was made.

The Stars will be the only team in the NHL to feature green as it’s predominant color in the 2013-2014 season.

Modano and current player Jamie Benn modeled the new duds in front of season-ticket holders Tuesday, both playing some role in the new look.

“You look good, you feel good and you play good, right?” Benn said.
