The backstage reporter was highly apologetic, saying his superficial editor ordered him to ask the question.

So, Sean Chen, what’s with the hair, that black mass thicker than midnight that obliterates his eyes when he’s at the piano?

“It just grows fast,” he said. “It’s only been over a month since I got it cut. It really does. It’s probably grown like a half an inch since I’ve been here.”

And there’s a reason he prefers long hair.

“I think my head and ears look big when I have short hair,” he said. “My ears are like, I look like a Japanese samurai. I don’t gel my hair back or anything so its just like poof. It just naturally is kind of like this. I put a little water on it before I go on stage but halfway through the performance its gone.”

Chen was asked about Justin Bieber comparisons that have popped up on Twitter. That’s where he drew the line.

“Bieber does not have hair like me, I’m sorry,” Chen said, genuinely horrified. “I mean, he’s like blonde and he doesn’t have that much hair. He like gels it and spikes it and all that kind of stuff.”
