The Dallas Cowboys continue to churn their roster this off-season with the release of undrafted rookie tight end Paul Freedman of Virginia and the signing of veteran tight end Dante Rosario.

Rosario was originally drafted in the fifth round (155th overall) in 2007 by Carolina out of Oregon. He caught 99 passes for 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns in 27 starts over 91 career games.

Rosario played four seasons with the Panthers before signing with Denver in 2011 as a free agent, but was released on final cuts. He signed with Miami and played two games before being released and re-signed by the Broncos, where he finished the season. He signed with San Diego last year and played in 13 games with two starts.

The Cowboys have six tight ends on their roster. They are Colin Cochart, rookie Gavin Escobar, James Hanna, Andre Smith, Rosario and Pro Bowler Jason Witten. — Clarence E. Hill Jr.

Kelly has cancer

Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly says he has been diagnosed with cancer in his upper jaw bone and will have surgery on Friday to remove a portion of his jaw.

Kelly is suffering from squamous cell carcinoma, but he has recently undergone tests to show that the cancer is isolated in his jaw and has not spread to other parts of his body.

“Doctors have told me that my prognosis for recovery is very good,” said the former Buffalo Bills quarterback. “I plan to tackle this challenge head on, as we Kellys always do, with toughness, perseverance and faith.”

Briefly

• Packers: Cornerback Sam Shields signed his one-year restricted free agent tender and will play in 2013 for $2.02 million.

• Lions: Leroy Harris, who started 39 games at guard the past three seasons with Tennessee, has agreed to terms on a one-year contract. Harris is still recovering from a partially torn ACL suffered last season. Lionel Smith, a former Texas Tech defensive back who spent 2012 on the practice squad, was waived.

• Trademark: Levi Strauss, the clothing entity that has acquired naming rights to the new 49ers stadium, has applied for trademark protection of the labels “Field of Jeans” and “Win One for the Zipper.”

• Steelers: First-round pick Jarvis Jones, an outside linebacker from Georgia, and second-round pick Le’Veon Bell, a running back from Michigan State, each signed four-year contracts. ... Michael Paranay, 25, was arrested and charged in the stabbing of offensive lineman Mike Adams during an attempted carjacking.

• Ravens: The Super Bowl champions are set to visit the White House on Wednesday but four players who are now on other teams — 49ers receiver Anquan Boldin, Eagles defensive back Cary Williams, Eagles quarterback Dennis Dixon and Titans defensive back Bernard Pollard — won’t be attending.
