A senior class that weathered budget-related class schedule changes and embraced the shift to an iPad-based education experience will accept their diplomas in seven graduating ceremonies Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The services for all six high schools and the alternative education program, more than 2,100 graduates, will take place at the year-old Mansfield ISD Center for the Performing Arts.

District officials who made deep budget cuts the past two years in response to drastic reductions in state funding said they made every effort to shield classrooms from the sudden austerity. But the biggest money saver – about $10 million – came from replacing the popular alternating-block schedule with a straight eight-period day.

Then this school year the district implemented its $6.5 million program of injecting more technology into the classroom, providing Apple iPad computer tablets to all high school students and teachers.

“The students were here for the belt tightening,” said district spokesman Richie Escovedo. “But even through all of that they were able to experience at least a year’s worth of time getting technology in their hands in the form of the iPad program.”

In another technological step forward, the district for the first time will air all graduation services live online at the district’s website, www.mansfieldisd.org. Previously, the services were only videotaped for later viewing online.

All services are at the Center for the Performing Arts, 1110 W. Debbie Lane

Seniors need to arrive at their home campuses two hours before graduation. Each high school’s seniors will be bused together to the Center for the Performing Arts. Each student can receive up to 10 free admission tickets.
