Post-semifinal chamber performance, Fei-Fei Dong was in such an elated mood that she took time out to plug her Shenzhen, China-based gown designer — Ji Xiang Zhai — whose latest number for Dong was a dark taupe, empire-waisted paneled dress with spaghetti straps.

As for her chamber performance, Dong couldn’t stop rhapsodizing about how smoothly her musical connection developed with the Brentano Quartet: “It was so natural between us that we didn’t even need all of our one rehearsal time to put it together,” Dong said. “It was magical.”

But even Dong is the first to admit that that kind of magic can’t last forever. “Now comes, for me, the scariest part: My solo semifinal recital.”

But for all her fear, Dong can’t help but smile what is quickly becoming the Cliburn’s most irrepressible grin.
